where are we going?
Ask the questions that matter with Kahee Jeong.
Having arrived in London to study painting at the Royal College of Art (RCA), Kahee Jeong was immediately captivated by the city’s vibrant energy and rich artistic heritage. London’s diverse ways of life have since motivated her to embrace new perspectives and see her identity as an artist in a more experimental and free-flowing light. She felt inspired in this truly international setting, seeking to grasp creative opportunities as they came, expose herself to captivating sub-cultures and styles, and ultimately discover her artistic voice in the melting pot along the way.
Kahee works primarily with mixed media, combining traditional painting techniques with contemporary, locally-sourced, and digital elements to establish layered textures and depth. In doing so, she explores themes of identity and transformation, often experimenting with novel materials such as self-made dyes derived from food waste. Challenging the boundaries of conventional expression, she continues to refine the direction of her sustainable artistic practice.
While walking the capital’s bustling streets, a stranger once handed Kahee an evangelical leaflet that simply asked, “Where are we going?” This question stayed with her, setting the scene for the creation of Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going? (2024), a piece guided by Gauguin’s existential inquiry, and evolving into a profound reflection on intimacy and meaning hidden amidst the hustle and bustle of London life.
For Kahee, a standout moment in London was participating in a collaborative eco-art exhibition, where artists from different backgrounds created works using recycled or environmentally-friendly materials. She found it incredibly satisfying to see such eclectic approaches to sustainability come together, observing as it hybridized into a movement so unexpectedly thought-provoking and powerful.
The exhibition epitomized a personal journey of constant adaptation and growth. While showcasing Kahee’s body of work, it also reinforced her passion for celebrating the interconnectedness of all living things, as well as an enduring commitment to igniting cultures of change in London and in-between the many borders she will inevitably cross.
