wandering between the weaves

In June Park moved to NYC after graduating from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), an intuitive development given the city’s proximity and allure. He remembers being taken aback by the sheer volume of people who came to the city from afar, many of whom shared the same burning desire to indulge their curiosities, extract opportunities, and make it big against the odds.

With its breakneck pace, NYC compelled In June to sharpen his senses and pay attention to life’s finer details. The hyper-aware state he finds himself in while navigating the crowds often gives rise to active observations that are best processed through spontaneous critiques and studio visits with fellow artists.

The intricate nature of In June’s urban observations requires him to meticulously examine every layer he washes over the canvas. For him, this process of gradually building up diluted acrylic washes is a means to push back against the speed of a city that demands immediacy. In his studio sanctuary, In June waits patiently for layers to dry and returns to the canvas on repeat. Through repetition, he broadens his perception of time and space, finding ways to visualize the fleeting treasures he has collected while on the move.

In June focuses on a collage of wandering ideas, singling them out like pigments settling between the weaves of the canvas: the kind that appear spontaneously in the back of a punctured puffer jacket or the rows of tucked-away shows underneath the subway seat on the commute to work. Rising to the surface, he extracts these fleeting memory fragments from their environment and places them under the spotlight, all the while contemplating the context in which they were formed, preserved, and ultimately reimagined.
