Trial, Error, and the Shades of Letting Go

For Hayoung Eum, trial and error is a quintessential aspect of the creative process. Often overwhelmed by the forces of excess and imagination, he employs color as a matter of control, as well as a powerful means of visualizing the complex emotions he experiences as an artist.

Hayoung’s life changes to the tune of fantasies he creates while moving between his home and studio. These fantasies manifest in his mind in the form or nuance of color, something that he enthusiastically transfers to the canvas as subtle gradations and spectrums before they are forgotten. In the early stages of development, color inspiration is derived from the works of his peers, as well as the sensuous nature and harmonious potential of the countless palettes he has encountered but which cannot be named. Trusting intuition, he learns to let go of his best intentions, gathering, erasing, and amalgamating his colors into a coherent whole.

Despite the harsh realities of adulthood, Hayoung’s thirst for empathy and comfort in life continues to expand. With varying shades of wit, he aspires to convey the authentic and often unspeakable deficiencies of our world in a relatable fashion. In this sense, color is a universal and democratic energy that carries differing weight depending on the viewer, immersing some in a warm embrace and leaving others in fits of gleeful stitches. No matter what, he always relishes the opportunity to select honest, and at times, crude color combinations. These colors reach out, leaving grand impressions, sparking talking points, and birthing exciting revelations that satiate his curiosity and lead him in new creative directions every time.
