suspended boundaries
press release
Museum Hanmi presents “Suspended Boundaries,” a solo exhibition by photographer Seungwon Yang, now on show at the venue’s Samcheong Annex. Yang was selected via the 24/25 MH Talent Portfolio, a critically acclaimed program that, now in its tenth year, aims to elevate the careers of talented emerging photographers in their 30s and 40s.
Through processes such as synthesis, rendering, and three-dimensionalization, Yang experiments with the prospect of transforming digital images. Relatable yet eye-opening, his works reconceptualize the boundaries between the real and virtual realms, tearing down the walls of objectivity and enabling viewers to experience and embrace photography’s often overlooked sense of fluidity, sensuality, and possibility.
The exhibition draws upon the phenomenological concept of “epoche,” asking those in attendance to pause, suspend judgment, and observe the world around with heightened sensitivity. Throughout, Yang employs water as a metaphor to visualize the flow state of human memory. In his installation pieces, he removes the flat and light essence of photography from the frame, printing images of water onto aluminium panels, before crumpling and transforming them into three-dimensional sculptural forms. He compels viewers to alter states and swim in the spaces in-between. Here, memories are born, recombined, and reimagined, with some standing the test of time, and others dissolving spontaneously into the ether.
The exhibition catalogue includes the photographer’s work notes, exhibition planning notes, and various curatorial reflections to match, allowing readers to enter Yang’s vivid imagination while immersing in the sensorial flow of the event itself. The museum will also hold a number of exhibition-related programs, from artist talks to interactive workshops where participants can test the waters of Yang’s photographic methods.

About the Gallery
Formerly known as The Museum of Photography, Seoul (MOPS), Museum Hanmi is Korea’s first institution dedicated exclusively to photography. Established by the Gahyun Cultural Foundation, the museum is a cultural hub where history, experimentation, and imagination converge through the lens of photography.
Home to thousands of photographic prints and film rolls accumulated over decades, the museum maintains a state-of-the-art climate-controlled repository, the first facility of its kind in Korea, ensuring optimal conditions for the long-term preservation and appreciation of photographic works. Its gallery spaces are equipped with advanced projection and sound systems that allow for immersive, large-scale presentations of photography as both image and experience.
Beyond exhibitions, the museum publishes critical catalogues and theoretical texts, building a platform for academic engagement while promoting contemporary discourse. It supports creatives through exhibitions, public programs, and educational initiatives designed to inspire the next generation of photographers.
