Beneath the Surface
A powerful portrayal of the not so ugly truth with street photographer, Boundary Lee.
As an invisible creative, Korean photographer Boundary Lee’s deep thinking works teeter on the borders of life in Korea. Through his critical lens, he sheds light on the gritty truth in an effort to experience the world with a renewed sense of empathy in his twilight years.
Through visually intense collections such as “Beyond Beauty” and “The Pursuit of Time,” Lee stimulates the synapses while breaking down social stereotypes as they unfold on the streets of Korea. With eyes wide open, he captures emotionally weighty shots that serve to normalize vulnerability and liberate his audience from a daily assault of expectations and apprehensions.
Hidden from view, Lee finds meaning and repentance in the eclectic colors and dynamic flow of urban life. He boldly unravels the veil of beauty, illuminating unspoken hardships to the disapproval of those around him. Often criticized for his over-fascination with “ugliness,” he has been forced to fluctuate between his conceptual passions and the more unassuming aesthetics of mainstream street photography in Korea. Nonetheless, his hauntingly beautiful portfolio continues to reflect the soul of a compassionate human being, a man who understands that human relationships can be a source of extreme pain, the scars of which embed themselves into the cracks and crevices of our hearts and minds.
By exhibiting his work through Vibes and Vistas, Lee reinforces his insatiable urge to engage deeply with the action taking place beneath the surface pixels. As his spectators, he draws us in, reveals long-buried wounds, and openly purifies the fragments of trauma in the light and open air.
