A Living, Breathing Palette
See that which Eun Jin Kim’s heart remembers.
Eun Jin Kim listens to the flow and resonance that color creates, observing the ways in which it reacts and spreads throughout her work. She often embeds high-value colors deep within the surface, layering denser tones on top and scraping through to create the impression of light radiating from within. Between intuition and process, color becomes the trace left behind where emotion has passed; a residue of feeling, a trajectory where sensation slowly permeates and fades through the materiality of the paint. As strands of color begin to tremble, seep in, and ultimately flow, they capture Eun Jin’s bodily movements and express her emotional range as it accumulates and dissolves over time. For her, color is not a tool for representing the outside world, but a living, breathing skin and visual structure that reveals the vibrations of the inner self.
During her time in New York, Eun Jin would utilize strong color contrasts and unstable, clashing hues to mirror the sharp and chaotic energy all around. Later on, life in Korea led her to focus more on subtle flows, textures, and the spaces in-between. Experiences of marriage, pregnancy, and childbirth further heightened her sensitivity to color. It started to rise, almost imperceptibly from within, following a quieter, deeper, and increasingly tactile rhythm. Most recently, Eun Jin has opted to layer and diffuse pale, borderline grayscale tones across the surface of her works, tracking emotional textures, and willing them to hang in the air and touch viewers on a natural, essentially corporeal level prior to interpretation.
