Jaeyoun Shin comes to terms with identity, complex memories, and relationships issues by re-interpreting life events and material objects. With a delicate touch, she utilizes materials such as pens, pencils, watercolors, and oil pastels to probe the boundaries between safe and unsafe spaces, releasing herself from the clutches of vulnerability in the process. Seemingly out-of-place, the animals that roam Jaeyoun’s painted terrains challenge rigid socio-cultural norms, subvert stereotypes, and deepen the conversation on belonging in our increasingly interconnected world.
